Dermatologist Advice: Skin Hydration

Healthy skin is hydrated skin, and maintaining your skin’s moisture balance is essential to keep it looking and feeling its best—especially during cold-weather months. Just like we need water to survive, all skin types need moisture, but it’s important to tailor your skincare products to your skin’s unique needs. Here, board-certified dermatologist Janelle Vega, M.D. of Miami, Florida, shares her advice for keeping skin hydrated this winter.

Dr. Vega stresses that it’s important to understand the difference between dry and dehydrated skin. “Dry skin does not produce enough oil while dehydrated skin has trouble holding on to moisture,” she explains. “Although these skin concerns are not season-specific, the drier air and artificial heat that come along with winter tend to cause dehydration in all types of skin.

How to: Cleanse skin without stripping moisture

Dermatologist Advice: “During winter months, milk-, cream- and oil-based cleansers help maximize the skin’s hydration levels,” explains Dr. Vega. “A micellar water cleanser is a great moisture-preserving option as well, especially for those with sensitive skin.” These liquid cleansers contain molecules that attract dirt, oil, and debris making it easy to thoroughly cleanse the skin without the need to rinse.
Recommended: La Roche-Posay Physiological Micellar Solution, Vichy Pureté Thermale 3-in-1 One Step Cleansing Micellar Solution, Vichy Pureté Thermale Beautifying Cleansing Micellar Oil.

How to: Choose the most effective moisturizer

Dermatologist Advice: According to Dr. Vega, hyaluronic acid is an ideal moisturizing ingredient because each molecule is capable of holding 1,000 times its weight in water. “Hyaluronic acid improves dryness and dehydration without clogging pores so it won’t cause breakouts,” she says.
Recommended: Vichy Aqualia Thermal Rich Cream, Vichy Idéalia Skin Sleep, La Roche-Posay Hydraphase Intense Light.

How to: Find a moisturizer that won’t irritate sensitive skin

Dermatologist Advice: Sensitive skin is often caused by a weak or compromised skin barrier, which can cause the skin to lose moisture as well. Dr. Vega recommends a moisturizer with glycerin for sensitive skin types, as this gentle, non-irritating ingredient is very effective for preventing moisture from evaporating.
Recommended: La Roche-Posay Toleriane Ultra Intense Soothing Moisturizer, Vichy Nutrilogie 2 Intense Cream.

How to: Select an anti-aging moisturizer

Dermatologist Advice: “Moisturizers can do more than simply hydrate the skin,” says Dr. Vega. “This skincare step is a wonderful opportunity to deliver anti-aging ingredients that can minimize the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone.” Products that combine a hydrator like hyaluronic acid with skin-rejuvenating ingredients such as retinol or Rhamnose are ideal for those starting to see fine lines, loss of firmness and dullness. For those experiencing hormone-based skin changes such as extreme dryness, deeper wrinkles and thinning skin, look for products containing shea butter, soy extract or omega fatty acids which work together to replenish lost moisture and visibly re-plump skin.
Recommended: Vichy LiftActiv Supreme, Vichy Neovadiol Gf Night, Vichy LiftActiv Retinbol HA Night, La Roche-Posay Redermic C Anti-Wrinkle Firming Moisturizer, Active C Anti-Wrinkle Concentrate.

How to: Keep oily skin hydrated

Dermatologist Advice: One of the biggest mistakes women (and men!) with oily skin make is skipping the moisturizer. “Oily skin is also prone to dehydration, which is why moisturizer is imperative, especially this time of year,” explains Dr. Vega. The key to controlling shine and preventing clogged pores is maintaining hydration with a daily moisturizer that is formulated with oily skin in mind. “Look for hydrating oil-free formulations and gentle exfoliators to help minimize the appearance of pores and leave skin with a fresh, matte finish.”
Recommended: Vichy Aqualia Thermal Power Serum, Vichy Normaderm Deep Cleansing Gel, La Roche-Posay Effaclar Mat Oil-Free Mattifying Moisturizer.

How to: Treat dry skin on the body

Dermatologist Advice: Skin from the neck down is especially prone to dryness, itching and flaking during the winter months, but a few small steps can make a big difference. . According to Dr. Vega, “Avoid taking very hot showers, and be sure to apply moisturizer while the skin is still damp to lock in moisture.” Body skin is thicker than facial skin so it needs richer hydrators like shea butter and glycerin, plus soothing ingredients like thermal spring water to quell itching. And for extremely dry skin, Dr. Vega recommends a more intense balm-like hydrator for long-lasting moisture.
Recommended: La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5, La Roche-Posay Lipikar Body Milk Lipid Replenishing Body Lotion, Vichy Ideal Body Serum Milk.
